The Liesl Collection is a story of art carried forward. Created in collaboration with Andrea Monath Schumacher, the collection transforms the extraordinary body of work by her grandmother, Elizabeth Burger Monath, into wallcoverings designed for contemporary interiors.

Liesl’s career spanned more than five decades and crossed continents. Trained in Vienna and Paris and later working in New York, she explored woodblock printing, intaglio, painting and illustration with a spirit of curiosity and experimentation. Her work reflects a global outlook shaped by modernism, travel and material exploration. Working closely with Andrea, The Vale London has translated this legacy into a series of wallcoverings that honour the original artworks while giving them new life on the wall.

Geometry softened through colour and craft

Liesl Lattice began as an intaglio print composed of intersecting forms and translucent layers. Created through etching, the original work reveals depth and tone through ink pressed into carved metal. The Vale London transformed this piece into a repeating lattice, preserving the structure of Liesl’s handwork while introducing rhythm and scale. Printed on a textured paperweave ground and offered in four colours, the result feels architectural, tactile and quietly expressive.

A globally inspired design.

The design for Guli originates from Liesl Monath’s Guli Mask woodblock print, inspired by her time in Nigeria and her fascination with African art and symbolism. The Vale London extracted the textured ground from the original artwork, a rhythmic field of marks and crosses, and reimagined it as a modern, architectural pattern.

Printed on a non-woven ground with dimensional lacquer ink, Guli highlights the raised stripe of crosses, adding subtle depth and tactile movement to the surface. Available in three colours, Guli captures the spirit of Liesl’s global influences through a distinctly contemporary lens.

Carved in wood, printed on silk.

Cubist draws from one of Liesl’s mid century woodblock prints, where interlocking abstract forms reflect her training in Paris among the modernist avant garde. Reimagined as a wallcovering, the layered geometry remains intact while gaining a new sense of refinement. Printed on a metallic silver ground, Cubist introduces subtle lustre and light play. Available in four earthy colourways, it offers a sophisticated interpretation of modernist abstraction.

Original Art: Swirl

Originally titled Swirl, this design began as a woodblock print created in the 1950s. Its looping forms capture Liesl’s fascination with movement and abstraction during the post war period. The Vale London reinterpreted the artwork as a mirrored, continuous pattern. Printed on a shimmering mica ground with matte three dimensional digital printing that traces each swirl, Lava Lamp has a tactile presence that shifts with changing light. Available in four colours, it brings a playful energy balanced by refinement.

Together, the designs in the Liesl Collection reflect a lifetime of artistic exploration translated through a contemporary lens. Each pattern tells a chapter of Liesl’s story, from modernist structure to expressive freedom, while Andrea’s personal connection ensures the work remains deeply authentic. The collection bridges fine art and interior design, offering wallcoverings that are thoughtful, layered and rich with history, designed to live beautifully in the present.
